Walking a Tibetan Terrier

Tibetan Terriers are clever, sensitive, and deeply loyal companions with an independent streak.

Moderate energyenergy level — general orientation

Tibetan Terriers were bred to move — their broad, flat, snowshoe-like feet evolved for covering snowy mountain ground alongside their people, and they carry real stamina as a result. Aim for at least an hour of daily activity split across walks and play, and let their agility shine with games, hikes, or canine sports that also give their clever mind something to do. Their profuse coat handles cold well but can trap heat, so shift exercise to cooler parts of the day and offer water breaks in warm weather. Because they are independent thinkers, loose-leash walking and reliable recall take patient, consistent practice rather than a few quick sessions, and a harness paired with positive reinforcement helps turn walks into calm, cooperative time together.

Winter — Deep-winter season across much of the US and UK — shorter daylight, icy paths and road salt call for shorter, more frequent walks and a quick paw-wipe afterwards.

Spring — Spring conditions across much of the US and UK — mild temperatures suit longer walks, though wet paths and shedding season make a quick towel-down worthwhile.

Summer — Peak-heat season across much of the US and UK — plan walks for cooler morning and evening hours and keep an eye on pavement temperature.

Autumn — Autumn conditions across much of the US and UK — cooling temperatures suit longer walks, and earlier dusk makes reflective gear sensible on evening rounds.

In the Southern Hemisphere seasons are reversed — if you are south of the equator, flip this guidance.

  • Pavement check on warm days: press the back of your hand to the pavement for 7 seconds — if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws.
  • Cold-season paw care: road salt and de-icing grit can irritate paws — wipe or rinse paws after walks and watch for ice building up between the pads.
