Dogs and Fireworks: A Safety Guide and Step-by-Step Checklist
Last reviewed: 2026-06-22 · General information only.
Fireworks and loud celebrations can be frightening for dogs — their hearing is far sharper than ours, so the sudden bangs feel intense. The good news is that a little preparation goes a long way. Fear of loud noises is common, but the exact dates of fireworks — and the risks around different types of homes — vary depending on where you live. This guide helps you prepare your dog and your home for fireworks season.
Understanding the global danger dates
Depending on where you live or travel, fireworks happen at different times of the year. In the US, the 4th of July is a notorious time for lost dogs; in the UK, it's Guy Fawkes Night; and New Year's Eve sets off fireworks almost everywhere. Knowing your local high-risk dates helps you plan ahead. Hover over the map to see what's coming up near you.

Start early: help your dog get used to the sounds
The most effective help is gradual. In the weeks before fireworks season, many dogs can grow more comfortable with the sounds — so the best preparation starts well before the night itself.
A month (or more) before:
- Gently get your dog used to firework-type sounds: play recordings very quietly at first, then increase the volume slowly over days and weeks, pairing the sound with treats, meals or calm play. Free sound-desensitisation programmes exist — ask your vet to recommend a reputable one.
- Check your dog's microchip details — make sure your current phone number and address are registered in the database. A microchip can't help if the contact details are out of date.
- Make sure the collar fits securely and has a clear ID tag; if you use a GPS tracker, keep it charged.
- If your dog is very fearful, speak to your vet now (see below) — some approaches work best when started well ahead of time.
Set up a safe space
On the day, a familiar hiding place makes a big difference.
Prepare a safe haven:
- Set up a cosy den in an interior room — somewhere with no windows, or where curtains can be drawn. Add their bed, a worn t-shirt that smells of you, and a favourite toy.
- Keep it freely accessible, and never shut your dog inside against their will. A panicked dog confined in a small space can hurt itself trying to escape — let them choose to go in and out.
- Turn the lights on and draw the curtains to hide the flashes. Use a fan, white noise, the TV or calm music to help cover the bangs — audio won't block them completely, but it softens the sudden contrast.
- Give the final toilet break and the main meal before dark, while it's still quiet — an anxious dog may not want to eat or go out later.
Housing types and escape risks
A frightened dog's instinct is often to run, so how you secure your home matters — and it depends on where you live.
If you live in a house with a garden (suburbs/rural):
- The biggest risk is your dog jumping or digging under the garden fence in a panic.
- Never leave your dog outside unattended during fireworks, even in a secure garden.
- Lock any dog doors so your dog cannot bolt out.
- For toilet breaks, keep your dog on a lead — even in your own garden — using a well-fitted harness or martingale collar that a frightened dog can't slip out of.
If you live in an apartment (urban):
- The main risks are your dog running out the front door into traffic, or jumping from an open balcony.
- Use an 'airlock' system: secure your dog in a separate room before opening the main front door.
- Close all windows and make sure balcony doors are securely locked.
On the night
When the fireworks start, your calm presence is one of the most reassuring things for your dog.
During the fireworks:
- Stay calm yourself — dogs take their cues from us, and a relaxed presence helps soothe them.
- Comfort your dog if they come to you. The old idea that this 'rewards' fear is a myth — calm comfort will not make the fear worse.
- Never scold or punish a frightened dog; it only adds to their stress.
- Try gentle distraction: a long-lasting chew, a stuffed food toy or a lick mat can help some dogs settle.
- Prioritise safety over the schedule. Even if it's normally toilet time, don't take your dog out while fireworks are actively going off. It's always better to clean up an indoor accident than to lose a panicked dog in the dark.
When should I talk to a vet?
If your dog experiences severe anxiety during fireworks, consult your veterinarian well in advance of the holiday — not on the night. They can talk through options such as behaviour training, anxiety-reducing garments, or medication, and help you choose the right plan for your dog.
Two things are worth raising with them: timing matters — any calming medication a vet recommends usually needs to be given before the noise starts, not once your dog is already panicking; and a sudden, new fear of loud noises in an older dog is worth a check-up, as it can sometimes be linked to pain or another underlying issue.
Key takeaway
Fear of fireworks is common — and manageable. Learn your local high-risk dates, start getting your dog used to the sounds early, secure your specific type of home against escapes, set up a freely-accessible safe haven, and comfort your dog (it won't make the fear worse). Put safety ahead of the usual toilet schedule while fireworks are going off, and for severe anxiety, plan ahead with your vet.

Frequently asked questions
What should I do if my dog needs to pee during fireworks?
Wait for a longer lull in the noise, then take them out on a secure, well-fitted lead or harness — even in a fenced garden. If the fireworks are continuous, it's safer to let them use a puppy pad indoors than to risk a frightened dog bolting.
Should I comfort a dog scared of fireworks?
Yes. The old idea that comforting a dog 'rewards' its fear is a myth — most veterinary behaviourists agree that calmly comforting your dog will not make the fear worse, and it can help them feel safer. Just stay calm yourself, and never punish a frightened dog.
Is this a substitute for veterinary advice?
No. yes.pet provides general information only and is not a substitute for professional veterinary advice, diagnosis or treatment. Always consult your veterinarian for severe phobias or a sudden change in your dog's behaviour.
