Walking a Spanish Water Dog

Spanish Water Dogs are intelligent, energetic working dogs bred to herd, guard, and retrieve on Iberian farms and fishing boats.

High energyenergy level — general orientation

The Spanish Water Dog's exercise needs are substantial: this is a working herder and retriever bred for a full day's activity, and a short daily walk alone rarely satisfies it. Vigorous exercise, swimming, retrieving games, or structured herding, agility, or dock-diving work give both body and this breed's sharp mind something to do — under-exercised dogs often redirect that energy into barking, digging, or herding household members. The curly coat sheds very little but mats quickly if brushed, so towel-dry rather than brush after wet walks or swims, and plan for a periodic clip instead of routine grooming. Puppies do best with low-impact play and shorter outings while their joints are still developing, building toward the breed's naturally high adult stamina, and early leash and recall training pay off given how strong the herding and retrieving drives can be.

Spanish Water Dog walks this month

Winter — Deep-winter season across much of the US and UK — shorter daylight, icy paths and road salt call for shorter, more frequent walks and a quick paw-wipe afterwards.

Spring — Spring conditions across much of the US and UK — mild temperatures suit longer walks, though wet paths and shedding season make a quick towel-down worthwhile.

Summer — Peak-heat season across much of the US and UK — plan walks for cooler morning and evening hours and keep an eye on pavement temperature.

Autumn — Autumn conditions across much of the US and UK — cooling temperatures suit longer walks, and earlier dusk makes reflective gear sensible on evening rounds.

In the Southern Hemisphere seasons are reversed — if you are south of the equator, flip this guidance.

  • Pavement check on warm days: press the back of your hand to the pavement for 7 seconds — if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws.
  • Cold-season paw care: road salt and de-icing grit can irritate paws — wipe or rinse paws after walks and watch for ice building up between the pads.
