Walking a Silky Terrier
Silky Terriers are alert, keen, and affectionate toy terriers.
Walking a Silky Terrier is less about distance and more about management: their keen nose and hunting instinct mean a squirrel, bird, or blowing leaf can trigger an enthusiastic lunge, so a secure harness (easier on the throat than a collar, and kinder for a breed that can be prone to tracheal irritation) and a leash held with intention are non-negotiable, even in a fenced yard. Their light coat and small body mean they chill quickly, so a sweater or coat is worth carrying in cool weather, and hot pavement deserves the same caution as it would for any small-footed dog. A brisk daily walk plus a little off-leash play in a securely fenced space keeps both body and busy mind satisfied.
Silky Terrier walks this month
Winter — Deep-winter season across much of the US and UK — shorter daylight, icy paths and road salt call for shorter, more frequent walks and a quick paw-wipe afterwards.
Spring — Spring conditions across much of the US and UK — mild temperatures suit longer walks, though wet paths and shedding season make a quick towel-down worthwhile.
Summer — Peak-heat season across much of the US and UK — plan walks for cooler morning and evening hours and keep an eye on pavement temperature.
Autumn — Autumn conditions across much of the US and UK — cooling temperatures suit longer walks, and earlier dusk makes reflective gear sensible on evening rounds.
In the Southern Hemisphere seasons are reversed — if you are south of the equator, flip this guidance.
- Pavement check on warm days: press the back of your hand to the pavement for 7 seconds — if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws.
- Cold-season paw care: road salt and de-icing grit can irritate paws — wipe or rinse paws after walks and watch for ice building up between the pads.
