Walking a Schipperke

Schipperkes are curious, confident little watchdogs.

Moderate energyenergy level — general orientation

The Schipperke's main walking challenge is less about distance and more about impulse control: that strong prey drive means a rustle in the bushes or a fast-moving squirrel can turn a calm walk into an intense pursuit, so a secure harness, a sturdy leash, and early recall and loose-leash training matter more than mileage. Daily walks paired with sniffing time and a bit of training along the way satisfy this breed's need for both exercise and mental engagement — a purely physical walk without any novelty tends to leave a Schipperke understimulated. Because they are naturally alert and vocal, expect some barking at passersby, other dogs, or unfamiliar sounds, and use those moments as calm training opportunities. Their thick coat handles cold well, but keep an eye on warm, humid days and offer water and shade as needed.

Winter — Deep-winter season across much of the US and UK — shorter daylight, icy paths and road salt call for shorter, more frequent walks and a quick paw-wipe afterwards.

Spring — Spring conditions across much of the US and UK — mild temperatures suit longer walks, though wet paths and shedding season make a quick towel-down worthwhile.

Summer — Peak-heat season across much of the US and UK — plan walks for cooler morning and evening hours and keep an eye on pavement temperature.

Autumn — Autumn conditions across much of the US and UK — cooling temperatures suit longer walks, and earlier dusk makes reflective gear sensible on evening rounds.

In the Southern Hemisphere seasons are reversed — if you are south of the equator, flip this guidance.

  • Pavement check on warm days: press the back of your hand to the pavement for 7 seconds — if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws.
  • Cold-season paw care: road salt and de-icing grit can irritate paws — wipe or rinse paws after walks and watch for ice building up between the pads.
