Walking a Lhasa Apso

Lhasa Apsos are confident, independent little sentinels — dignified and watchful with strangers, but devoted and often quite funny at home once trust is earned.

Moderate energyenergy level — general orientation

A Lhasa Apso's exercise needs are modest but real: a couple of daily walks plus some active play keep this alert little dog fit and satisfied without demanding a large yard or long mileage. Their heavy coat is better suited to cool weather, so plan walks for the cooler parts of the day in summer and consider a light coat of their own in cold, wet conditions to protect the long fur from matting. A well-fitted harness protects the neck and windpipe better than a collar, and because they can be reactive or vocal toward unfamiliar dogs, a calm, well-managed route helps every walk stay a positive experience.

Winter — Deep-winter season across much of the US and UK — shorter daylight, icy paths and road salt call for shorter, more frequent walks and a quick paw-wipe afterwards.

Spring — Spring conditions across much of the US and UK — mild temperatures suit longer walks, though wet paths and shedding season make a quick towel-down worthwhile.

Summer — Peak-heat season across much of the US and UK — plan walks for cooler morning and evening hours and keep an eye on pavement temperature.

Autumn — Autumn conditions across much of the US and UK — cooling temperatures suit longer walks, and earlier dusk makes reflective gear sensible on evening rounds.

In the Southern Hemisphere seasons are reversed — if you are south of the equator, flip this guidance.

  • Pavement check on warm days: press the back of your hand to the pavement for 7 seconds — if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws.
  • Cold-season paw care: road salt and de-icing grit can irritate paws — wipe or rinse paws after walks and watch for ice building up between the pads.
