Walking a Leonberger

Leonbergers are calm, patient giants with a working heritage in farm and water rescue.

High energyenergy level — general orientation

The Leonberger's main walking consideration is protecting a large, still-developing frame rather than covering serious distance. Daily exercise keeps this giant breed fit and engaged, but growth plates stay open well into the first two years, so favor multiple shorter, low-impact outings over one long or high-impact session while a puppy is growing. Their heavy coat handles cool weather well, but heat calls for exercising in the cooler parts of the day and watching for heavy panting as a cue to rest and offer water. Many Leonbergers also enjoy swimming, a nod to their water-rescue heritage and a joint-friendly way to build stamina. Comfortable harness use and early leash manners are well worth the investment, since a calm, well-mannered walk is far easier to establish with a growing puppy than with a fully grown adult that can weigh well over 100 pounds.

Leonberger walks this month

Winter — Deep-winter season across much of the US and UK — shorter daylight, icy paths and road salt call for shorter, more frequent walks and a quick paw-wipe afterwards.

Spring — Spring conditions across much of the US and UK — mild temperatures suit longer walks, though wet paths and shedding season make a quick towel-down worthwhile.

Summer — Peak-heat season across much of the US and UK — plan walks for cooler morning and evening hours and keep an eye on pavement temperature.

Autumn — Autumn conditions across much of the US and UK — cooling temperatures suit longer walks, and earlier dusk makes reflective gear sensible on evening rounds.

In the Southern Hemisphere seasons are reversed — if you are south of the equator, flip this guidance.

  • Pavement check on warm days: press the back of your hand to the pavement for 7 seconds — if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws.
  • Cold-season paw care: road salt and de-icing grit can irritate paws — wipe or rinse paws after walks and watch for ice building up between the pads.
