Walking a English Cocker Spaniel

The merry English Cocker Spaniel is exceptionally social and biddable, making them an ideal partner for reward-based training.

High energyenergy level — general orientation

Walking an English Cocker Spaniel is an energetic and engaging experience, as this breed possesses a high need for daily exercise and thrives on brisk walks or jogs. Due to their birdy flushing instinct, they possess a moderate prey drive and are easily captivated by scents, making a reliable and positively-reinforced recall essential before allowing any off-leash exploration. After navigating wet or brushy trails, their medium-length, flat or slightly wavy coat requires careful attention; their long, pendulous ears and the feathering on their chest, legs, and belly easily trap moisture and debris. Thorough drying, brushing two to three times a week, and regular clipping are required to prevent mats and maintain consistent ear health.

Winter — Deep-winter season across much of the US and UK — shorter daylight, icy paths and road salt call for shorter, more frequent walks and a quick paw-wipe afterwards.

Spring — Spring conditions across much of the US and UK — mild temperatures suit longer walks, though wet paths and shedding season make a quick towel-down worthwhile.

Summer — Peak-heat season across much of the US and UK — plan walks for cooler morning and evening hours and keep an eye on pavement temperature.

Autumn — Autumn conditions across much of the US and UK — cooling temperatures suit longer walks, and earlier dusk makes reflective gear sensible on evening rounds.

In the Southern Hemisphere seasons are reversed — if you are south of the equator, flip this guidance.

  • Pavement check on warm days: press the back of your hand to the pavement for 7 seconds — if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws.
  • Cold-season paw care: road salt and de-icing grit can irritate paws — wipe or rinse paws after walks and watch for ice building up between the pads.
