Walking a Collie
Collies are bright, gentle herding dogs that respond well to reward-based guidance and act as alert, communicative guardians.
Walking a Collie is typically a very pleasant experience, as they are naturally attentive and eager to work in partnership with their handler. While their herding instincts provide a moderate prey drive that might occasionally inspire them to try and gather a fleeing squirrel, they are not driven by a strong hunting instinct and can quickly learn polite leash manners through positive reinforcement. The primary challenge often revolves around weather management; their heavy double coat means that warm-weather walks must be thoughtfully timed to avoid overheating. Additionally, their alert nature means they may use their watchful voice to express excitement about their environment, but reward-based focus games can easily redirect their attention back to you.
Collie walks this month
Winter — Deep-winter season across much of the US and UK — shorter daylight, icy paths and road salt call for shorter, more frequent walks and a quick paw-wipe afterwards.
Spring — Spring conditions across much of the US and UK — mild temperatures suit longer walks, though wet paths and shedding season make a quick towel-down worthwhile.
Summer — Peak-heat season across much of the US and UK — plan walks for cooler morning and evening hours and keep an eye on pavement temperature.
Autumn — Autumn conditions across much of the US and UK — cooling temperatures suit longer walks, and earlier dusk makes reflective gear sensible on evening rounds.
In the Southern Hemisphere seasons are reversed — if you are south of the equator, flip this guidance.
- Pavement check on warm days: press the back of your hand to the pavement for 7 seconds — if it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws.
- Cold-season paw care: road salt and de-icing grit can irritate paws — wipe or rinse paws after walks and watch for ice building up between the pads.
