English Setter

Living with an English Setter means welcoming a large, devoted sporting dog—typically weighing between 20 to 36 kilograms—into the heart of your family. They are famously excellent and gentle with children, displaying a patient and tolerant demeanor that makes them wonderful household members. Their highly sociable nature extends to other canines, as they are generally easy-going and thrive in the company of other dogs. However, because they form such close attachments to their humans, they face a moderate risk of separation anxiety if left alone for extended periods; they truly need to be integrated into your daily life.

While they are celebrated for their calm and mellow indoor behavior, this is an active bird dog at heart. They possess high exercise requirements and need substantial daily activity to remain physically and emotionally fulfilled. Mentally, their needs are moderate, but they are sensitive, independent thinkers who respond beautifully to positive, reward-based engagement. Harsh handling or raised voices can easily damage their trust and well-being. As natural hunters, they maintain a high prey drive, which means careful management is essential around birds and small pets.

Their physical care requires a consistent, loving routine. The English Setter's long, silky, flat coat, adorned with beautiful feathering, offers moderate cold and heat tolerance. They are moderate, seasonal shedders, and owners must commit to brushing them thoroughly two to three times per week to prevent matting in their feathered areas, ensuring their skin remains healthy and comfortable throughout their 10 to 12-year lifespan.
