House-training a Collie is generally an easy and rewarding process for this highly trainable breed. Thanks to their quick intelligence and strong desire to please, they easily grasp the concepts of outdoor elimination when guided with consistent routines. Their sensitivity to tone means that gentle praise and timely rewards will establish reliable habits swiftly, making them a naturally clean breed that integrates beautifully into a household environment.

Necesidad moderada de ejercicio

Walking a Collie is typically a very pleasant experience, as they are naturally attentive and eager to work in partnership with their handler. While their herding instincts provide a moderate prey drive that might occasionally inspire them to try and gather a fleeing squirrel, they are not driven by a strong hunting instinct and can quickly learn polite leash manners through positive reinforcement. The primary challenge often revolves around weather management; their heavy double coat means that warm-weather walks must be thoughtfully timed to avoid overheating. Additionally, their alert nature means they may use their watchful voice to express excitement about their environment, but reward-based focus games can easily redirect their attention back to you.

Temperamento

As a herding breed originally tasked with gathering and managing livestock, the Collie possesses a thoughtful, working mind. They have only moderate physical exercise needs and do not require endless miles of running, but their need for mental stimulation is wonderfully high. A Collie without a job, puzzle, or engaging game can become bored, so integrating trick training or interactive play into their daily routine is essential. They are notably sensitive to their handler's tone and mood, meaning they thrive best with enthusiastic, reward-based methods rather than harsh corrections.

In the home, Collies are remarkably gentle and patient, often forming deep, affectionate bonds with every family member, including young children. While they are famously devoted to their own people, they tend to be polite but reserved and watchful around strangers, preferring to observe new guests before seeking interaction. They generally coexist peacefully and are tolerant and easygoing with other dogs. Their prey drive typically manifests as a moderate desire to chase and gather rather than a predatory hunting instinct. Because they are so deeply people-oriented and bond so closely, they carry a moderate risk of separation distress if left alone for extended periods without adequate preparation.

Owning a Collie also means managing their distinct physical and vocal traits. They possess an alert, watchful herding voice and will readily bark to announce arrivals or unusual events. Physically, the breed comes in two varieties: the familiar long-haired "rough" Collie and the short-coated "smooth" Collie. Both feature a dense double coat that provides high cold tolerance but requires significant maintenance. They shed heavily, particularly during seasonal coat blows, necessitating regular, thorough brushing to manage loose fur and prevent painful mats. Because of this thick, insulating coat, they possess only moderate heat tolerance; it is crucial to schedule their walks during the cooler early morning or late evening hours in warm weather.

Anomalía ocular del collieNivel de confianza: high
Pruebas recomendadas: Prueba de ADN de anomalía ocular del collie (CEA) · Examen oftalmológico
An inherited developmental eye condition long associated with the breed; a one-time DNA test plus a board-certified ophthalmologist exam let breeders pair dogs responsibly and help owners understand what to watch for.
Sensibilidad a medicamentos MDR1Nivel de confianza: high
Pruebas recomendadas: Prueba de ADN MDR1
A gene variant that affects how some herding dogs — the Collie among the most commonly affected — process certain medications. A simple one-time DNA test lets your veterinarian choose safe drugs and doses.
Atrofia retiniana progresivaNivel de confianza: high
Pruebas recomendadas: Examen oftalmológico
A gradual, non-painful change in vision; regular exams by a veterinary ophthalmologist support early awareness so a dog can be helped to adapt comfortably.
DermatomiositisNivel de confianza: high
Pruebas recomendadas: Prueba de ADN de dermatomiositis (DMS)
A DNA test guides breeding away from this inflammatory skin-and-muscle condition seen in the breed.
