Border Terrier
Living with a Border Terrier means sharing your home with a game, affectionate, and busy little companion. Originally bred to work in the rugged Cheviot Hills, they bring a sturdy hardiness and an endearing, involved nature to family life. They thrive when given plenty of mental and physical engagement alongside their human pack.

Dificultad moderada para enseñar a ir al bañoHouse-training a Border Terrier is a moderate challenge that simply requires consistency, patience, and a positive approach. They are smart and eager to keep their living space clean, but their curious nature can sometimes leave them distracted by interesting scents outdoors when they should be focusing on their bathroom breaks. By establishing a predictable routine, offering frequent trips outside, and providing immediate, upbeat rewards for success, they will quickly learn the ropes.
Paseos
Alta necesidad de ejercicioThis is an active, high-energy breed that requires substantial daily exercise and possesses a high cold tolerance thanks to their close, weatherproof undercoat. Walks must serve as both physical exertion and mental enrichment, allowing them to engage their busy brains with plenty of sniffing opportunities while accommodating their moderate heat tolerance during summer months. Because of their high prey drive, reliable recall training and secure, enclosed areas are vital before allowing off-lead exploration. Rain or shine—but especially in the cold—they are hardy adventurers ready to safely explore.

Historically bred on the Anglo-Scottish border to run with foxhound packs and bolt foxes from dens, the Border Terrier retains a hardy, unexaggerated build and an alert, watchful nature. Weighing a compact 5 to 7 kg (females 5–6.5 kg, males 6–7 kg) and enjoying a lifespan of 12 to 15 years, these small dogs are well-suited for active households. Because they were developed to work alongside other hounds, they are generally tolerant and get on well with other dogs following good introductions. At home, they are deeply affectionate and prefer company, meaning they have a moderate risk of separation anxiety if left alone for long periods without their family.
While they are highly trainable and respond beautifully to short, upbeat, reward-based sessions, they are still terriers—meaning they are intelligent, independent thinkers who need a reason to cooperate. They have high needs for mental stimulation, relishing in sniffing games, trick training, and "jobs" to prevent boredom. Vocally, they are moderate; they make excellent alert dogs who will announce visitors, but they are not constant barkers.
Their working heritage also means they possess a high prey drive. They will enthusiastically chase cats, squirrels, and other small animals, making small furries non-ideal housemates. This strong instinct makes a secure garden and a reliable recall absolutely essential for their safety. When their high physical and mental needs are met, they are an absolute joy, settling wonderfully into family life.
